Painting and Coating
Colourific Coatings runs one of the most advanced powder coating facilities in North America. Their Woodbridge plant features a vertical coating line built to European standards, automated chemical dosing, real-time film thickness measurement, and process data archived at every stage of production. It is a serious industrial operation.
What makes it work is not the equipment.
The equipment is impressive. But equipment without operational control underneath it is just expensive machinery. Before Colourific invested in the line, before they took on the kind of volume and complexity their Woodbridge facility demands, they needed their operations to be trustworthy. Scheduling had to be accurate. Inventory had to be reliable. Finished goods had to be tracked. And the data coming off the floor had to match what finance was seeing.
That is what OnRamp manages for Colourific across both their Woodbridge and Mississauga facilities.
Coating contractors deal with a specific kind of operational complexity. Jobs are customer-specific. Lots need to be tracked from receipt through pretreatment, coating, cure, and shipping. Quality records have to survive disputes that might surface years after delivery. And the line schedule changes constantly because construction project timelines change constantly.
At Colourific, operators work directly from shop monitors installed line-side. Work orders are digital. When a job moves through a stage, the system knows. When material moves, purchasing is updated automatically and suggested purchase orders go out before shortages become problems. When a finished order is ready to ship, scanners handle the documentation. Their customers log into a portal to see exactly where their jobs, parts, and lots are without picking up the phone.
None of that works if your data is fragmented. If scheduling lives in one place and inventory lives somewhere else and shipping is tracked on paper, you are not running a controlled process. You are running coordinated guesswork.
Colourific’s financials stay in sync with what is actually on the floor through an integration with QuickBooks. What finance sees reflects what production has done. There is no reconciliation meeting. There is no version of the truth that exists only in a spreadsheet.
Here is the operational problem that matters most to a coating contractor’s cash flow, and the one that almost never comes up in ERP software conversations.
Colourific’s customers are architectural. Their project timelines shift. When a building is not ready for aluminium profiles, those profiles do not go to the job site. They stay at Colourific’s facility. In a finished, coated state. Taking up floor space and racking. Sometimes for weeks. Sometimes longer.
From the customer’s perspective, this is convenient. From Colourific’s perspective, it is a liability problem and a cash flow problem that compounds quietly until someone runs the numbers.
OnRamp made those numbers visible. Time-to-cash metrics, how long finished goods sat before they were picked up, the total value of customer-owned inventory occupying the facility at any given moment. When Colourific’s CFO saw those figures clearly for the first time, the response was immediate. Contract templates were updated. Sales and quoting teams started setting different expectations with customers about pickup timelines. The problem has not disappeared, but Colourific is making measurable progress on it because they now have the data to have the right conversations.
That is what operational visibility does. It does not just help you run the floor. It changes how you negotiate, how you quote, and how you protect your margins.
A recent feature in ipcm on Colourific’s Woodbridge facility describes a company investing in quality as a long-term competitive position. Their COO Majdi Rayyan put it plainly: customers today are buying reliability, not just colour. They want to know the process was done correctly and that the coating will perform over time.
That philosophy requires more than good equipment and good chemistry. It requires that every parameter gets recorded, every batch gets linked to its production history, and every operator knows exactly what to run and what to check. It requires that when a dispute surfaces two years after delivery, you can pull the original sample and trace the exact conditions under which it was coated.
OnRamp is what connects that floor-level execution to the business. Work orders flow through the system. Lots are tracked. Records are tied to jobs. The customer portal gives architectural clients visibility into their orders without pulling a Colourific employee off the floor to answer the phone.
Colourific did not invest in a new vertical line and then figure out how to run it. They built the operational foundation first, and the expansion followed.
That sequence matters. Growth in a coating operation does not come from adding capacity. It comes from controlling the capacity you have, trusting the data it generates, and building from there.
