OEE and OnRamp ERP

You have likely heard the old saying “What is not measured cannot be improved”. You likely know this for a fact, which is why you want and have software that helps you track your manufactory’s Key Performance Indicators, or KPIs, and metrics.

When it comes to an MES + ERP system (or what we like to call an MERP), one of the most important metrics in your Operations is how productive your tools and machines are. And in this subset of productivity metrics, one of the most important in OEE, or Overall Equipment Effectiveness.

What is OEE?

OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is a key metric for manufacturing productivity. It is used to identify the percentage of time where a work center is productive. For example, an OEE score of 100% means you are creating 100% usable product, as quickly as possible, with no Stop Time. Or, translated into metrics:

• 100% Quality
• 100% Performance
• 100% Availability

By measuring the OEE at a work center and analyzing the reasons for a less than perfect score, you will know what you need to improve in your manufacturing processes.

Measuring OEE

Traditionally, OEE would be measured by manually reviewing a work centers’ daily or weekly reports and looking at: Availability, Performance, and Quality.

From here, you could determine times or production runs where the center was below a given benchmark, then continue by interviewing the operators and floor supervisors as to what happened that caused a drop in the desired effectiveness.

However, in this age of Industry 4.0, you no longer have to rely on memories of previous days to find out how well your work centers are performing.

OnRamp Shop Monitors and OEE

With OnRamp Shop Monitors installed at your work centers, you can now get instant information on how well they are performing. By installing a shop monitor, your work center data is immediately fed to the central database where the data is displayed live to those that need it, when they need it.

This means that your OEE information will be more correct and current, allowing you to engage with Operations sooner to find out how the effectiveness and productivity of a center can be improved.

• Setup and monitor the OEE for your work centers

Setting up OEE

After installing the shop monitor at the work center and setting it up in OnRamp ERP, you will have to add the OEE monitoring parameters.

To do this, you must specify the shifts that need to be monitored:

1. Navigate to the Work Center Availability [S2809]
2. Select the work center.
3. On the desired shifts, click Add >>.

Result

You have added the shifts to the work center for monitoring.

Notes

• You can remove shifts from monitoring by clicking Remove.
• On the Availability (Specific Day) frame, you can override the shift monitoring for specific days by selecting the date and adding the shift.
• On the Downtime (Specific Day) fame, you can enter the date, time, and reasons for outage by clicking the Add button on the screen task bar.

Viewing OEE

Use the Work Center OEE screen to view the information for work centers. Here, you have the OEE metrics for the work center:

• Status displays the current OEE performance results for the work center in the selected date range
• History displays the OEE performance in bar for the work centre for each day in the date range
• Availability, Performance, and Quality display the respective metrics for the work center
• Downtime displays the number of occurrences and reasons for downtime and the time when it occurred
